New Moon in Libra: Redefine & Reconsider Beauty

Libra New Moon and Venus retrograde with a pink and gold Libra scales symbol and a portrait of the author.

This new moon in Libra comes to us while Venus is retrograding. Venus is the ruling planet of Libra. Libra loves beauty, and needs to surround herself with art and eye candy. Oh! How she loves the crimson color of the leaves on the Sycamore tree in October, kissed by the morning sun. How much delight she takes in an art gallery on a Friday evening. And the pretty tapestry on the wall in a new lover’s home.

Libra is full of contradictions, even though all she wants is for things to be peaceful and harmonious. So when Venus retrogrades on her watch, she takes a deep breath, and goes to the underworld to look for her. There, she realizes that she’s never been too far from this land of death and decay. And there, she must learn to reconsider beauty, to see it in different ways. .

Check out this video to explore the Libra archetype, with a wink and a nod at the retrograding Venus.

The Archetype of the New Moon in Libra

She brings with her the winds of Autumn, and tells the leaves; “it’s time to change.” She’s diplomatic, respectful, and wants no conflict, yet somehow, she’s the one who announces the return of the Season of the Witch. The irony is not lost on her. Libra often finds herself in situations where contrast carves a path of serpentine curves, right where she planned to straighten things out.

Libra is the Enchantress of Equilibrium. Her life’s goal is to bring balance, to solve asymmetry, to stabilize where something has gone uneven. But she only gets to equilibrate for one moment – on the Equinox, when day and night are equal – and then the balance tips over, and darkness grows stronger, the light dims, and unevenness prevails. She tries to bring the perfect balance, to pull the right strings that will make it all feel fair, and constantly has to make peace with a world that spins in ways that continuously interrupt the harmony she longs to maintain.

Libra wants to make beauty wherever she goes. She is attracted to elegance and charm. She orients herself around relationships, partnerships, and collaborations, and seeks to find the middle ground. She wants justice and fairness and equality. She’s ready to stand for what’s right. But she doesn’t want to fight. And so she finds that life is made of contradictions. You have to fight for peace, and as a peace maker, she must make peace with that.

Instead of continuous balance, Libra invites us into a process of learning to work with opposite forces, learning to carve a middle path that won’t exactly be even, but would create opportunities for beauty to blossom. And in a darkening season, she asks that we learn to see the beauty in the less obvious places, and encourages us to transform uncomfortable spaces into opportunities for listening to all the different sides of the story.

On this new moon, we are called to the soil of a complicated, complex world, where the seeds of what we’re wanting to cultivate during this lunar cycle can be nourished by the unexpected, and cared for by a messy, uneven reality.

Have a meaningful new moon.

With love,

Hagar
